Staats Family Genealogy Site Launched
2 April 2009 - 7:30:38am

We have finally gotten off the ground with a website intended to be
the central, authoritative site for Staats family genealogy and history.
The software chosen to power this site is phpGedView - which is a
mature, collaborative online-genealogy application. Multiple family trees
‎(gedcoms)‎ can be served on this site. So far, the Gowanus branch ‎(Jan
Pieterszen Van Huysen from Husum, Schleswig, Denmark (now
Germany)‎) of the Staats family has been started here with other
branches to hopefully follow soon.
Photo Gallery Now Online

Who is Jan Pieterszen Van Husum (aka Jan Pieterszen Van Huysen)?
Jan is the progenitor of the Gowanus branch of the Staats Family. He immigrated to New Netherland from Husum, Schleswig, Denmark by 1638. He did not have a surname, as most Danes and Germans did not at the time. However, it appears that Dutch officials in New Netherland required everyone to adopt a surname to make record keeping easier. The standard practice was to use the name of the town from where someone came as the surname. Thus, Van Huysen (meaning 'from Husum' in Dutch) became Jan's surname. Jan never went by the surname of 'Staats' and it wasn't until 1687 when his two sons Pieter and Jan adopted the 'Staats' surname for the Kings County 1687 Oath of Allegiance. Read more about Jan in his biography.
