DNA Project

The Staats genetic genealogy project began in August 2008 with the purpose of discovering as many Staats lineages as possible and learning if and how they are related. Some of the objectives of the project are:
  • Determine if there is any relation between Jan Pieterszen Van Husum (a.k.a. Jan Pieterszen Van Huysen) of Husum, Denmark (now Germany) and Abraham Staats (a.k.a. Abram Staes) of Amsterdam, Holland - who both immigrated to New Netherland(New York) in the 17th century. Visit the objective page and see the results!
  • Help participants fill in the gaps in their genealogical research by finding other participants that genetically match them and have more complete genealogical information.
  • Solve the mystery of who the father of Peter Staats(born about 1690) of Gowanus was. We know the father was either Pieter Staats (son of Pieter Janse Staats) or Jan Janse Staats (son of Jan Pieterszen).
  • Build genetic 'fingerprints' of what our ancestors' DNA might have been. This will provide forensic evidence that will help participants and researchers more accurately determine their ancestry.
  • Discover if their is a relation between one of the Staats lines and the Storts line.
As of June 2009, there are 5 members that have joined the project and we are already seeing some very interesting results. A couple of these members are now closer to filling in some genealogical gaps and discovering who their immigrant ancestor was. We also have discovered there is no relation between Jan Pieterszen Van Husum and Abraham Staats of Albany.

If you are interested in participating, you can join the DNA project by purchasing either the Y-DNA12 test, Y-DNA37 test or Y-DNA67 test. By doing so you will receive a discounted price and automatically be included in the project. It is highly recommended that new participants purchase, at a minimum, the 37-marker test to be able to more accurately determine how closely related they are with other participants.
