Abram Staes:
Progenitor of the Staats Family of
Albany
by Timothy B. Staats
and Henry N. Staats IV

THE STAATS FAMILY name is one of the older surnames dating from New Netherland. Several distinct families bear the name Staats, complicating the genealogies of those with the surname.  This essay on Abram Staes, who arrived at Fort Orange (present-day Albany, New York) in 1642, is intended to resolve some of the myths, correct errors, and elaborate on the known family history of his Staats descendants.
