Discovering, collaborating and freely sharing our families' histories.
Goal: Determine if there is any relationship between Jan Pieterszen Van Husum (a.k.a. Jan Pieterszen Van Huysen) of Husum, Denmark (now Germany) and Abraham Staats (a.k.a. Abram Staes) of Amsterdam, Holland.
Hypothesis: There is no direct-paternal relationship between Jan Pieterszen Van Husum and Abraham Staats. Background: Both of these men are the immigrant-ancestor progenitors of 2 lineages of Staats families in the United States. Jan Pieterszen Van Husum immigrated to New Amsterdam (Long Island, NY) circa 1638 and removed to Gowanus(Brooklyn) by 1642. Abraham Staats immigrated to the Albany, NY area circa 1642.
The Staats genetic genealogy project began in August 2008 with the purpose of discovering as many Staats lineages as possible and learning if and how they are related. Some of the objectives of the project are:
In December 2009, I (Sean Staats) received the honor of being elected to membership in the Holland Society of New York. The HSNY has a strict membership requirement in that you must be a descendant of an ancestor, along your direct-paternal line, who lived in New Netherland before or during 1675. How is it that I could possibly meet that requirement? The immigrant ancestor of my direct, paternal line is Jan Pieterszen Van Husum (also known as Jan Pieterszen Van Huysen.) He was born in 1605 and around 1638 emmigrated from Husum in Kreis Nordfriesland, Schleswig, Germany.
We have decided to move our family tree to geni.com. The reasons should be apparent once you see it. Geni.com allows for easy viewing, navigation and collaboration on a family tree. Please let me know if you would like an invitation to join our family tree. The following tree only shows Sean's direct ancestors.
Greetings! My name is Sean Staats and I’ll be your partner in researching the multiple Staats family lineages. I myself am descended from Jan Pieterszen van Husum (aka van Huysen). I started studying genealogy about two years ago and must admit that I have become addicted to genealogy. This is not really a bad thing except for the occasional sacrificed sleep. Anyway, lets talk about why genealogy and why this website.
I am excited to announce the start of this new, dynamic and collaborative website dedicated to Staats genealogical and historical research. Let me introduce myself. My name is Sean Staats and I'm a genealogy fanatic. That almost sounds like I'm introducing myself to a genealogy addicts therapy group. Actually, I'm hoping to find other Staats genealogy fans who are as eager as I am to share knowledge, discover our roots and history and build a great, informative website. Even though this site has just started, there are already a few points of interest:
Please consider joining in our efforts that I believe will benefit the descendants of the several unique Staats families. Be sure to add this site to your favorites and check back often for updates.
I would like to welcome you to the Staats Genealogy and History Site! It is the goal of this site to be the central, collaborative location for those who are researching, or simply interested in, the history and genealogy of any Staats family. My name is Sean Staats and I have been researching my family genealogy for 2 years now. During that time, I have found a lot of Staats-related genealogical information on the internet. Unfortunately, the information was from many, disparate websites, poorly organized and usually without sources of information being cited. One of the biggest rules in genealogy is that if you can't prove it, then it isn't true. This site serves a number of purposes:
